54. The Volunteers

The small conference room thirty miles outside of the city was crowded. Rented by a shell company of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, it was used to conduct business that could not be traced back to the government and was perfect for undercover operations.

The group of forty-five men, and Sharon Price, squeezed into folding chairs or stood lining the walls. Special Agent in Charge Wheaton was at the front of the room. The term SAC seemed to carry more importance with this group than it had with the members of the OSI. Bob Shaklee stood to one side, Andy Barnes and Sharon Price to the other.

Wheaton called the meeting to order.

“Can I have your attention everyone?” The shuffling and murmurs subsided. “I’ve been speaking with the Deputy Director of Investigations and we agree that it is time, we brought everyone together.” He looked at Shaklee and his OSI Team. “This is Director Shaklee of the Georgia Office of Special Investigations, Andrew Barnes the deputy director and Sharon Price, their senior intelligence analyst.” He motioned to the room, looking at the OSI team. “These are our operatives.”

Shaklee nodded. He had been briefed by Wheaton in advance. Sharon and Andy looked at each other, eyebrows raised.

Andy turned to Wheaton. “Would you explain the term operative, please?”

“Certainly. They are undercover agents…part of a task force. We pulled them in from assignments around the country to go into the Muslim community here, places we can’t go undetected…to listen… see what they can see…develop leads for us.”

“You mean they’re Muslim.” Sharon scanned the faces of the men packed into the room. Many wore light beards, most appeared to be in their early thirties, and all regarded her with about the same level of skepticism that she wore on her face.

“Yes.” Wheaton nodded. “They are Muslims…or of Muslim descent.”

“What does that mean…Muslim descent?”

“It means that they are loyal Americans.” Bob stepped forward.

Sharon eyed the group. “Are they also good Muslims?”

“Sharon, I’m not sure that is an appropriate question. We need the help. They have volunteered.”

“Are you a good Christian?” A man in his forties, seated in the middle of the room smiled and nodded, indicating that he had posed the question to Sharon.

“What’s your name?” She met his gaze.

“Azim.”

“Azim, Christians aren’t killing people.”

“You know that for a fact?”

“I know that the physical evidence, bomb residue, the methods used point towards Islamic terrorism.”

Azim nodded. “No argument from me, although Christians have, in fact, killed their share in the name of their religion. Northern Ireland comes to mind…the pogroms against Jews in Russia…Nazi Germany…witch burnings…the Inquisition.” He shrugged, having made his point. “I agree, however, that it is very likely that the persons responsible for the bombings and deaths in Atlanta are fundamentalist Muslims.”

“Good. At least, we agree on that.”

“But you didn’t answer my question. You asked if we were good Muslims. Are you a good Christian?”

Sharon pursed her lips. All right, fine. Let’s have this out now. “Probably not, by some standards,” She answered frankly.
